Chinese Pigs Get Inked

Have you seen the “Tattooed Pigs” video on YouTube?

This arguably stocking concept was created by Belgian artist Wim Delvoye.   Delvoye initially started by tattooing pig hide he obtained from slaughterhouses and later transitioned to tattooing live pigs.

Matching tattoos! If this pig had a mirror, he'd wake up to decorated skin.

Delvoye reasons that by placing small drawings onto the pigs and letting the animals grow, he essentially increases the pigs’ value, both physically and economically.

In order to tattoo a pig, Delvoye says that they “sedate it, shave it and apply Vaseline to its skin.”  His tattooed pigs sell for upwards of $138,569 and his work has appeared in various art exhibitions in Beijing and Shanghai.

Will tattooed farm animals be the next trend?  Only time will tell.  What we do know for sure is that these tattoos will not be coming off with baby oil or rubbing alcohol.
