How to Apply a Temporary Tattoo

To get the most out of your temporary tattoo, pick an area of your body that doesn’t sweat much, and isn’t subject too much stretching of your skin when you move around. Typical areas include the back of the hand, upper arm, chest, or small of the back to mention a few. Definitely avoid joints such as the elbow as the constant movement will cause the temporary tattoo to wear off rather quickly.

The cheek is a great location

Once you have decided where to put your temporary tattoo, wash the area with soap and water. You want to make sure that you remove any dirt, oils, and dead skin cells as they can greatly reduce the effectiveness that your fake tattoo or custom temporary tattoo will adhere to your skin. Once you’re finished scrubbing, dry the area with a towel, and then let it air dry. Your skin needs to be completely dry for the best results!

Now that your skin is clean and dry, align your temporary tattoo so that it is on your skin exactly how you want it. Make sure that your temporary tattoo is facing the right way; the side of the card that has the ink/glue combination should be touching your skin. Holding the temporary tattoo card in place, take a damp washcloth or sponge and gently press it against the temporary tattoo card. The washcloth or sponge shouldn’t be too moist, if water is able to drip out when you press your washcloth or sponge against the tattoo, you’ve got too much water.

Water is all you need!

While you’re pressing the damp washcloth or sponge against your temporary tattoo, you can gently massage it. This will help the glue and ink to completely adhere to your skin. But take care not to let the card slide around while you’re holding it against your skin, or else the temporary tattoo will come out blurry or not at all! Keep this up for about 5 whole minutes, be patient! After five minutes, you can take off the damp washcloth/sponge and get ready for the final and most important step.

Now you’re ready to remove the temporary tattoo card, and see the masterpiece in the flesh (so to speak). It is very important that you take this part very slowly and very carefully. While taking hold of the temporary tattoo card from one of the corners, you must slowly and gently peel the card off of your skin, the slower and smoother your peel, the better. If you go too fast, you will rip the temporary tattoo off of your skin, and all your time and effort will be wasted. Once you’ve finally got the card off, you should be able to see the work of art on your skin! Now all that is left to do is to let your skin and the temporary tattoo dry. You can speed up the process by blowing on it, or using a hair dryer, but do not try to use a towel! Touching the temporary tattoo while it is still wet could ruin the image, remember, it’s made of glue and ink, and it needs to be dry before you can touch it. Once it has dried, you will have yourself a temporary piece of body art that your can show off to your family and friends. For extra fun, tell them that you got a new tattoo, and see the look on their faces! You can tell them it’s only temporary afterwards.
